Why don’t England play 4-2-3-1, with Carrick and Barry as the two, Lampard-Rooney-Gerrard as the three and Crouch as the striker?
Advantages:
1. There’s plenty of cover for our dodgy central defenders. Carrick has limitations, but all he has to do is get the ball to one of L-R-G, not do anything creative.
2. Our three best players (like Elano-Kaka-Robinho for Brazil) get lots of space to be creative, and can dominate the play around the opposition’s ‘Makelele’
3. Crouchy is then there to be nuisance in the box, and nod the ball down for L-R-G, or get on the end of something they’ve created.
4. There are plenty of players who can then cover when Johnson and Cole go forward, taking advantage of the spaces created by our big three.
Disadvantages
No Heskey
